Tuning Up My R.P.M.’s

RPM onewordpost

January is a-buzz with resolutions, commitments, and one-word’s! I think it is an excellent idea to set goals and aspirations for the new year and I used to do that – but then, a few years ago this one-word thing showed up and I joined the bandwagon of “one-worder’s”. I wasn’t new to the practice because you see the Lord gave me a LIFE WORD back in 2003 that has been the anthem of my life – HOPE! Hope is my forever word but it’s good to open our hearts and ears to hear a principle God wants to plant deeply into our spirits each year of our life.

This year God got real “bossy” with me, back in November. It was an ordinary morning – I was sitting in my comfortable chair in my secret place, the morning was young and I had my nose in a book by Bob Sorge, The Secrets of the Secret Place. (Note: this book is well worth reading and I can’t recommend it enough.) Honestly, I was just minding my own business when HE practically delivered a postcard in my hand, which read:

ONEWORD2016 – DISCIPLINE

And, then He implied, Because you need some in three areas: Reading the Word, Talking to Me, and Exercise for your body. How do you reject THAT? I chose to embrace it and here is how that looks: Discipline largeIn 2016 I will be tuning up my R.P.M.’s! AND, I plan to be disciplined and intentional in doing so. I have accountability partners in place and my sister and I are reading the Bible through with the same plan – she is as excited about it as I am. I want to share the RPM plan:

  1. Read. My sis and I are using a chronological reading plan and we chose The Message translation. How many times can I say, “Love, love, love this way of reading The Word.” Did you know Job’s story happened somewhere between Genesis 11 and 12? IF reading through the Bible has gotten “stale” (keepin’ it real here folks) try the chronological way. Just Google ‘chronological read through the bible’. Please let me know if you choose to join me and sister on this exciting journey in 2016! The discipline: Read every day that does not begin with an “S”. 2 Timothy 2.15
  2. Pray. When one intentionally sits down to read The Word, GET READY! You will be confessing and repenting (almost) every other verse. I have a running prayer list and there are times I just lay hands on it and say, “Yes, Lord.” Then, there are times of intense prayer and intercession. Times of being awakened at 3 a.m. with someone on my heart. Holy Spirit insisted I set my alarm for 11:55 p.m. on New Year’s Eve (I go to bed early), and welcome 2016 on my knees. I did it – the prayer wasn’t very articulate, but don’t think my heavenly Father really cared! I was obedient and I read somewhere that obedience is better than sacrifice! Can I get a witness? The discipline: Pray without ceasing and never say amen!  1 Thessalonians 5.16-18
  3. Move. As in exercise my body! We are empty-nesters; I work from home as a customer service manager for a small manufacturing company; and, we live in a rural setting with no great walking path unless I want to dodge 18-wheeler’s on the road! All that to say, it is very easy for me to be complacent and lazy and still! I do a 20-minute workout with a dvd by Teresa Tapp (Google her, if interested). It is an excellent way for me to workout and stretch, which is what I want to do in order to stay fluid and flexible. The discipline: Work the dvd every day that does not begin with an “S”. Acts 17.28

Now, you know my plan of action and can hold me accountable too! One can never have too many partners!

On January first, I was reading and my good, good Father blessed me with a scripture for the year…

Now therefore, if I have found favor in Your sight, please show me now Your ways, that I may know You in order to find favor in Your sight. Exodus 33.13 (ESV)

I firmly believe the Lord and I are going to have one awesome year!

Thanks, Susan, for shaking us all up! This is my second year to go at the Bible with my good husband – we read out loud together – and I can’t say enough about how beneficial it has been to have that time in the word together. You’re gonna love that part of your discipline commitment! Especially in The Message! I agree- you’ve got one awesome year ahead of you!
So glad that I’ll get to hear about it now and then!

Susan, I enjoyed this so much! I used to do t-tapp and have been thinking of getting back into it. I love your idea of reading the Bible chronologically. I usually read through the Bible and then start over again in Genesis which is where I am now so it might be a good time to start chronological reading. I am also trying to incorporate periods of prayer each day. Blessings to you!

Yes, Susan, I do have a word for this year, though at first glance, it sounds rather strange. My word is “whatever.” It really is! Because I’m trusting that whatever comes my way in 2016, the Lord will be right there beside me to see me through.
Like you, I am reading the Bible systematically. Not sure where our pastor got this particular rotation from, but it is truly working for me.
Thanks for the awesome inspiration today. Blessings!

REALLY? That is so cool – hold him accountable!!! Thirsty! I love that word. I wrote a blog years ago called “ARE YOU THIRSTY?” Going to find your email and send it. Thanks for the encouragement!

Got it! Thanks for sharing your post, Susan. I love the line – ‘When the spiritual thirst strikes be sure to make the right choice – the One and Only choice.’ Pure wisdom. Thanks for taking the time to send some encouragement my way. Blessings!

Well said Susan! What great thoughts you’ve shared here…thank you for sharing. I love your word and your logo for 2016! It was eye opening and so educational for me when I followed along with Bible Discovery TV as they went through the Bible chronologically in 2013. It really tied things together better in my mind. May God bless you and yours as you plan to Read-pray–move at a new level in 2016! Blessings!

Susan, you always come up with the best titles and play on words! I love how you lay out easy steps for yourself and for us to follow too. So glad you are my friend and my neighbor at Susan’s link up today. 🙂

Isn’t it so God-like when you meet someone for the first time and just know “you would click”. I felt that way about you and Patty, although I didn’t get a chance to really get to know either of you at Allume. I have a feeling together with the Holy Ghost, we could bring down the house! Thanks for commenting! xo

Susan, this is great! My word for 2016 is FAITHFUL. I need to work on keeping my faith in the Lord. Just last weekend my faith was tested a little and when the Lord reminded me of it, I let the situation go because He was in control. Thankfully, He worked everything out and in His perfect timing. Thank you for sharing with Thankful Thursdays.

This is a great post, Susan! Thanks so much for sharing this over at Coffee & Conversation last week! My word this year is “Endure”, as in “to last” – I love having one word so much more than a New Year’s resolution (which I always fell off from by February – LOL).
    Have a great week!
